Christo: Hey there! In today‘s tip I want to share something that we do to help to build a sustainable team and a happy team.

So a couple of things that we include, that we do here ourselves at Basic Bananas that I thought I would share with you today which can hopefully benefit you in growing a team and a happy work environment. Now a couple of things, we want to make sure we‘re having fun. I always believe fun‘s a big part of business and things being sustainable. If you want to be in business for a long time, it‘s good to include some fun. So you don‘t get bored and stale. So one of our team members here is part of our team happiness as well to ensure everybody‘s having fun.

Now, what I want to focus in on this tip is more around people have the fear that okay let‘s say we‘re going and having some fun well that‘s time out of the business, that‘s money being wasted like so, let‘s say 10 of our team members are all having fun for an hour or two hours in a work day. If you do the maths, it costs a bit of a volume of money that most people have a fear around. Okay, we‘re paying all this and suddenly but we‘re not actually getting work done. Now the reality of what we‘ve seen, if you want things to be sustainable over a long term, those two hours where you‘re actually spending are going to be made up well and truly in the long run. If the team‘s having fun and you have a better stick rates so you‘re not re-training new team members over and over again. Also, the value of having a valuable happy team member is 5 times better maybe even 10 times better than in a low performing unhappy team member.

So just imagine, someone‘s 5 times better, and you all know this if you‘ve had different team members at different periods of times, people who are not so effective, you might have to take 5 team members to do what one person does. So this person could be potentially, obviously, even paid a bit more, they can be timed out, you can make sure you look after them and make sure they‘re having fun when you do have that valuable team member. Rather than trying to squeeze people or something like that and having this unhappy team because it‘s going to be a lot less effective for you. So you can do the maths on that. If one person‘s worth 5, well that‘s a lot more valuable than what paying these 5 people are, obviously, would be. Especially if you‘ve got a couple of those.

So keeping everybody happy, make sure that you show kind of put fun into the days and don‘t feel bad about taking the time out to enjoy a bit of the journey of business that you and your team are going on together. So that‘s the tip for today.

I‘d love to hear any of your thoughts, any comments or anything or anyone you know who would benefit from this tip. Feel free to go and share that with them as well. Hopefully, we‘ll see you on the next tip or on our podcast. If you don‘t know we have a podcast, check it out. It‘s called Pick of the Bunch by Basic Bananas.
