(1:30) Establish the Why

(1:57) The What

(2:30) The How

(3:15) The next steps

Franziska: Hi and welcome back! My name is Franziska Iseli and I‘m one of the founders here at Basic Bananas.

So the other day, I was presenting at an event and after, I hung around and I spoke to some of the audience members. One of them said, “Franziska, how do you remember all these content? How do you manage to talk for an hour or two hours or three hours without ever looking at any content?” I said, “well, I have a little bit of a secret formula that I use that helps me sort of understand where I‘m at in a presentation and just makes me be able to free flow quite a lot.” So I‘m going to share this formula with you right now.

I adapted this, actually someone else created it, I forgot who it was. He was a psychologist, I think, who created the sort of the basic framework and then I just adapted it to make it work for me, and I think it will also work for you.

So this formula, it has 4 steps in it. I am going to walk you through each of them.

The first step: Basically, I use this exact same framework for everything. Right now, I use it when I speak, I use it when I run a workshop, I use it when I want to convince a team member to do something sometimes. So, it works really for anything. So, the first step in this formula, what you need to do when you put together a presentation is you need to establish the “why”. So the first part is the “why”. You need to establish what‘s the purpose of today‘s topic? Why is it important? And then you just need to talk a little bit more about why there is such a benefit in listening to you today. So you can include statistics, you can include inspiring quotes, you can even share a story. So you just establish “why”. Why this topic? Why now? And why should they listen?

Then the second part is the “what”. The what is very small. It‘s the tiny part of your presentation and it‘s just really there to say, “hey, so the topic that I am talking about today is blah.” If there are any words that you need to explain first, if there‘s any jargon, you can also do that in this part. So you just say, “hey, when I refer to AI. that means Artificial Intelligence.” So you just basically, quickly “dejarg” and it‘s a very quick part.

Then the biggest part of your presentation is number 3. So the largest part of your presentation is number 3. That is the “how”. Now you go into the mid of what you‘re actually sharing. So if I talk about maybe 7 strategies to use more Artificial Intelligence for increased customer service for example. Then I‘m going to go step number 1, make sure you have a chat book on your website for example, step number 2, etc. Now in the how part, in the 3rd part, you go into how to actually do what you‘re talking about. This can be used for any topic, of course. If you talk about leadership, if you talk about how to use a product or service, now you explain how to do it. So that‘s the biggest part, normally, of your presentation. It‘s bigger than the “why”.

Then, once you‘ve finished all that, the number 4. The 4th part of your framework is the next steps. So what‘s next? Maybe you have a call-to-action. So you might say, “hey, if you would love to learn more about Artificial Intelligence, come to my website franziskaiseli.com, and I will share with you some more insights there.” Or you might have next steps for them to do. So you might say, “to get started with this stuff, go to this website and sign up for a blah.” So you just have a little bit of what‘s next. You might even have a quick summary in the last part. So in the 4th part, you might even say, “hey, so what I looked at today are these 7 things. Now next steps are these.” If you want to have Q&A, so if you want to allow people to ask questions often, that‘s also the 4th part of your presentation.

That‘s pretty much it. I‘ve used this formula for many, many years. It‘s sort of, I almost feel not because I‘ve used it so often. Anytime I put any thought on a paper, I follow this same structure. Even when I write articles. So when I write articles for a publication, I am a guest writer for a few different, like Huffington Post and Ink Magazine. So then I just even when I put a topic down on a page, the first draft is following that structure again because I want to have the buy in first. So I start with the why. Then I say what this is all about and then I talk about how to do it.

So that‘s it. I trust you can use this. Of course, if you can apply or if you know someone who can apply this same framework, feel free to share this video with them because for us, the more ripple effects we can create, the more people we can support, the more we can help, the happier we get, the bigger our smiles get. So help us share the love and I‘ll catch you next time.
